The free alternatives are good enough: I used Avira for a long time - it's still on a very old XP PC - and for the time being, Ashampoo Anti-Malware & Agnitum Outpost Security Suite Pro, two giveaways - and never had any virus. Believe me, all this made me a Norton basher (I so loved his "Commander" and books in those days |-(Īs for the problems encountered with Norton, they do seem very real, but I am quite sure the culprit is Norton itself. Last time (and on Win7) I used Norton's own uninstall tool, then very carefully removed those entries I was quite sure about (still a risky business, isn't it?) and removed a few leftover files and folders scattered over my system. The worse part is that if you try to remove them (RegScanner again), your PC will refuse to start altogether and can only be rescued through the Recovery Manager at startup (happened twice to me since, after reinstalling Vista, I would Trust Norton for the "free" months and the uninstall it!). Revo in "Advanced Mode" would still ignore between 5 and 700 entries. Do a "simple" uninstall and you'll find close to 1000 leftovers in the registry (RegScanner on "Norton" and "Symantec"). So my advice is: just get rid of it:ġ) Because of all the problems mentioned in these comments.Ģ) Because it's a terrible memory hog and a burden on the OSģ) Because it's very badly interwoven with Vista (at least: I immediately removed it from my new Win7)). Again, everything went on flawlessly and, for the fun (got that registration already -), I tried to get it again through my rarely used Hotmail account: it was there in a matter of seconds!.Īs for the problems encountered with Norton, they do seem very real, but I am quite sure the culprit is Norton itself. A few hours after installing and testing on my desktop, I tried the install on my laptop under Win7 (in case I might have to reinstall this damned Vista for the 5th time and loose my GAOTDs!). Again and again, I don't understand most of the problems some people encounter with GAOTD and, especially with Wondershare, (except as I said in my previous comment about being administrator of your machine).
